Friday is the big day—and already, a small group of publicity hounds are camped out in front of Apple’s Fifth Avenue flagship store in Manhattan. Also: developers line up submissions for the App Store, and AT&T posts videos on what to expect come launch day.
First up: Headlines began cropping up as early as Independence Day about lines forming in front of Apple Stores for the new, 3G-capabile iPhone.Well, as it turns out, we’re only talking a single line here (in front of Apple’s “cube” store on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street), and it consists of about 10-odd environmental activists looking to get into the Guinness Book of World Records. Members of the group say they want to raise awareness about … well, a number of things, including “sustainability, affordable housing, energy security, locally-grown food,” and “eating right,” according to Fortune. Gotcha. Oh, and they may buy a few iPhone 3Gs, as well.Other than these guys, I haven’t seen any evidence (at least so far) of other early lines for the iPhone 3G—and indeed, some predict that the lines won’t be as bad as last year, when the iPhone frenzy was at its height.Meanwhile, AT&T has posted a series of videos detailing how to get ready for the new iPhone, including tips for new and existing AT&T subscribers and a how-to for handing off your old iPhone to someone else. For its part, Apple has cleared up some lingering questions about how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G. For instance, new iPhone 3Gs bought in the U.S. will come with their own SIM cards, so you won’t need the SIM in your old iPhone. (Non-U.S. iPhone users will be able to use their old SIM cards, however).Moving along, it sounds like the iPhone App Store is on track for its expected July 11 launch, with TechCrunch reporting that developers have until today (July 7) to submit their application in time for the store’s unveiling. Forbes notes that Apple has approved only 16 percent of 25,000 applications, which makes for about 4,000 iPhone/iPod Touch apps at launch. Wow.And finally, where’s the best place to buy at iPhone 3G—at an Apple Store or from AT&T? Carrier reps told Gizmodo that the buying process should be identical no matter which store you go to, although business customers looking to get corporate discounts should head for an AT&T store.
I’ll be getting in line myself early Friday to pick up the iPhone 3G; visit www.electronics-911.com for your own Iphone 3G on friday as well.
The world’s smallest Mac is about to get a lot bigger. Passionate developers have cracked the code to write true native applications for the iPhone, beginning a new era of true binary development for the ground-breaking handheld computer.
There’s only one problem: Apple wants to forbid these developers from doing what they do best. Yes, in the iPhone’s topsy-turvy world, real software development is forbiddenâwhat developers are supposed to do is put together Web “applications” that can be hit by the phone’s Safari browser.
Fortunately, programmers have been pretty ambitious there, too. Web “apps” may not have quite the power and punch of native applications, but they can keep you busy with simple games, let you access gigabytes of music and video, or add instant-messaging to a device that desperately needs it.
One warning: using some of these apps tends to make your iPhone rather toasty warm and completely guts your battery life. If you’re streaming a lot of content over Wi-Fi (say, through Glide or Seeqpod) expect to get no more than a few hours’ use of your iPhone on a charge.
As we scoped out our top iPhone apps, we kept in mind that we’re PC Magazine . So almost everything in our list is Windows compatible. Here are our picks for the Top 10 iPhone Appsâor, in some cases, PC apps to go with your iPhone.buy apple iphone

Once again, Nationwide Insurance proves that it’s On Your Side® when a mishap occurs – this time whether you’re a customer or not.
Touted as the first-ever claims application for a mobile device from an insurance company, Nationwide Mobile is designed to support any Apple iPhone user after they are involved in a car accident.
Available free via an Apple App Store download, this new iPhone app is packed with a variety of features that quickly guide users through some of the important steps to take after an accident. With the touch of a few buttons, users can contact emergency services, exchange information with another driver, or take photos of the scene and any damage. Additional functions allow users to request an auto insurance quote or find a local Nationwide insurance agent, too. Enhanced capabilities, such as locating a Blue RibbonSM Repair Facility, having a tow truck dispatched and submitting information to immediately begin the claims process, are available to Nationwide customers.
Intended to enhance customer service by improving response times and providing more personalization, Nationwide Mobile proves to be a true extension of the company’s new ‘I am On Your Side®’ ad campaign and brand promise.
The app was developed through Nationwide’s partnership with Rosetta, the leading independent interactive agency in the U.S. The agency helped Nationwide conceive, create and launch the application, and purposely developed it to utilize the tools already available on the iPhone, such as the built-in GPS and camera.
“As with all of our initiatives, we wanted the Nationwide Mobile app to help simplify our customers’ lives, and the design and functionality Rosetta brought to the app are helping us do exactly that,” said Sue McManus, AVP of marketing for Nationwide. “We have plans to roll out additional features for the app in the coming months and are very excited about the direction Rosetta is providing as we evolve the app.”
Added Eric Cantini, a managing partner at Rosetta: “Because one of the most common occurrences in an accident is for those involved to have trouble remembering what steps to take or the details of the accident, we made sure the app was as simple as possible to use in what is almost always a very stressful situation. It essentially does all of the work for you.”

More than just a regular cellphone, the Apple iPhone has several features which help it stand out from the crowd, we go through an overview of them:
Phone Features:
The iPhone supports features like conferencing, call holding, call merging, caller ID and integration with cellular network features and functions. For example, when an incoming phone call is received, any music currently being played will be muted. Once the call is completed, the normal music will resume.
SMS text messages will be displayed similar to an email inbox, and can be sorted by topic. In addition, text messages will appear as message “bubbles” under each users name.
Together with cellular operator AT&T Mobility, formerly Cingular Wireless, the iPhone has the ability to display voicemails in a “Visual Voicemail” format. This allows users to see voicemails in a graphical manner and be able to play voice messages at will, rather than the typical chronological manner that is currently offered by cellular operators.
The iPhone supports the Bluetooth 2.0 wireless standard, meaning users can use compliant cellphone headsets for hands-free operation.
Camera:
The Apple iPhone features a 2.0 megapixel camera on its back panel. The iPhone cannot record video at this time. The iPhone also includes software which allows users to edit and email photos. This software also communicates with the iPhoto software on Mac computer.
Multimedia Capabilities:
Featuring memory capacities of 4 gigabytes and 8 gigabytes of flash memory, the iPhone features adequate storage for digital music collections. It incorporates a new digital music library system which makes it easier for users to sort through their collection.
The iPhone can offers video playback, giving users the option to watch movies and TV shows. The videos play while the iPhone is in a landscape orientation.
Internet Access:
The iPhone has built-in Wi-Fi wireless networking and is able to connect to the Internet using a modified version of Apple’s Safari browser.
It can also access a 2.5G EDGE telecommunications network to access the Internet.
While the iPhone does not have support for the 3G high speed communications network presently, Apple has said there are plans to add 3G support in future versions.
The Apple iPhone provides support for the IMAP and POP3 email protocols giving users the ability to check and compose emails on the device. At present there is no enterprise connectivity, other than the 2 email protocols listed.
Battery life:
The iPhone has a built-in battery which provides robust usage for the device. It is not intended for the user to replace. The battery is listed to be capable of providing up to 7 hours of video, 6 hours of web browsing, 8 hours of talk time and music playback time of 24 hours. It has up to 250 hours of standby time.
