With some iPhone applications, users find that they lose interest after playing with it for a few days. Pocket God by Bolt Creative hopes to change all of that with their clever, weekly additions to the app. For me, this is one of the best casual games I have on my iPhone.
The premise of Pocket God is simple: you get to play god to a group of pygmy villagers. You can decide to leave them in peace, happily strolling the island, or you can unleash catastrophes on them. When the pygmy dies, it can be replaced by the tap of a finger. I love taking a quick break from a stressful meeting to create havoc on the island; it’s a great stress reliever in my day. After all, nothing can be as bad as having red hot lava fall on my head!
The graphics of this app are terrific. The pygmies have a cute, retro look, and the bright colors are cheerful even amid the disasters. It’s one of those apps that make you smile from the moment you open it. There’s a cartoon quality to the violence in the game, and while the pygmies haven’t done anything to deserve their fate, there’s a kind of delicious joy in flinging them into a volcano or feeding them to the sharks.
Pocket God has one feature that has set it apart from other applications, and that’s the commitment from its developers to update it regularly. These updates, or episodes, give you new features to challenge your little people with. At first, you only had the ability to poke and prod your pygmies, drop them in the water, and drop them from the sky. Since then, episodes have gotten more complicated and more enjoyable.
Episodes add new abilities, and currently, users are able to throw pygmies into a volcano, drop coconuts on their heads, strike them with lightning, the latest release creates vampire pygmies who turn into dust when the sun comes up. My favorite ability is the ability to change the time of day, because at the sunset, the pygmies get a very sweet, dumb look that is really adorable.
Another thing that I particularly appreciate about this application and its developers is the way they listen to people and their suggestions for Pocket God. There are numerous reviews in iTunes that talk about how their suggestions were implemented after writing to Bolt Creative, such as being able to turn off certain god powers when you don’t wish to use them. These app developers really listen!
There are so many applications out there that it can be tough to decide which ones will actually be worth spending the money. Taking care to read the reviews about every app you’re considering buying can make sure it will be money well spent, and in this case, the reviews are overwhelming. When it comes to Pocket God, the constantly changing story combined with the great graphics make this well worth every penny.

I’m sure most of you have heard about Apple’s new iPhone and all the different functionality it has to offer, so I’ll spare you the details. What I will share with you are the top ten applications that I enjoy and use on a daily basis.

1. ZenBe Lists – This is a to-do-list application that lets you itemize your daily tasks. The app features a minimalist green user interface, extremely functional features, and a free price tag. I find ZenBe Lists to be above and beyond other to-do-list applications, which is why I chose it as part of my everyday apps.

2. NetNewsWire – Sorting through my feed list is much more efficient on the iPhone as opposed to on the web. That’s where NetNewsWire is so helpful; this application is an RSS reader just like its parent Newsgator only for the iPhone. So if you’re one to enjoy news feeds then make sure you review NetNewsWire.

3. Twinkle – This is a great Twitter application. If you’re asking yourself what a twitter is, don’t feel too bad. Twitter is a website that allows you to blast out short updates about your daily life (“I’m at home on Appcraver looking at this new game, and then I’m going to the market”) to your friends and people that want to track you. So what’s so special about Twinkle? Well the main differentiator is that it knows your location. It taps into the iPhone GPS and adds your current location to all of your tweets! You can also keep track of nearby twinkles.

4. Facebook – It seems nowadays everyone is obsessed with checking their Facebook; well at least I am. This application makes it easier; it gives you one touch access to all of your friends, your profile and inbox. You can even ping anybody who is online and start chatting instantly. The best part is you have immediate access to your Facebook inbox and you don’t have to login every time. Oh and did I mention it’s free.

5. Shazam – This totally free application is a life saver! Have you ever heard a song that you loved so much, but didn’t know the name of it or who the artist was? Well with this application you can solve that problem once and forever. All you do is hold the iPhone up to the music that’s playing and hit the “Tag Now” button. Shazam does the rest! A couple seconds later it will return the name of the artist, record cover and name of the song right to your iPhone.

6. Pandora – This next application is great for parties or whenever you want music playing but don’t want to assume control of the songs. All you have to do is type the name of a band, and Pandora will create a custom “radio station” around that band, which includes songs from the band itself, as well as songs that “sound like” that artist. Pandora is an amazing application for music discovery, pick a channel and let Pandora be the DJ.

7. Bloomberg – Finally a finance application that I can use to constantly stay up-to-date on markets around the world. Bloomberg offers news, stock quotes, company descriptions, top performers, price charts, market trend analysis and more. Although painful at times, I enjoy following my list of stocks. Your probably wondering what this type of app costs, well it’s free.

8. AOL Instant Messenger – AIM for the iPhone is a great product, and works just the way you would expect it to. But it does have a drawback that tends to bug me. Unless the application is open, you don’t get alerted when you receive a message. I don’t know about you, but when I get a message I want to be notified instantly. With the iPhone it presents a problem because as of now you can only have one application open at a time.

9. Movies – The new Movies application allows you to search local theaters for show times, view movie details, and watch movie trailers. There isn’t much to complain about this app, it was designed well and pays close attention to detail. What’s amazing about it aside from the free price tag is that it was developed by a college sophomore who sold it to Flixter.

10. Calendar – Number ten on my list goes to the Calendar application. You’re probably thinking, “Wait doesn’t that come with the iphone?” The answer is yes, it does come with the iPhone, which is probably why it’s such a great application to begin with. I use this calendar every day to manage my schedule, after this app I simply refuse to go back to my old desktop schedule.

There you have it, my top ten iPhone applications that I can’t live without. For more information on any of the above mentioned apps or new iPhone applications visit Appcraver.com.

One of the more entertaining aspects of owning an iPhone is the plethora of apps that are available for your use and enjoyment. Some of them are really helpful, informative, or at least interesting: weather updates, celeb gossip, directions, movie times, etc. Then there are the completely superfluous apps that make you scratch your head and wonder why anyone would ever need that — right before you download it yourself. iBeer is probably one of the most pointless apps, yet everyone seems to have it. It’s an app that turns your screen into a full pint glass of beer, and you can “drink” it by tilting your iPhone downwards. The beer then flows out of the pint glass. Sounds simple enough, yet it’s enough to reduce grown men to giggles when they all use it.Tickle Me! is another app that seems to be mainly for the amusement factor – even if that factor does wear off pretty quickly. The app enables your touchscreen to respond to you tickling it, with a slightly irritating child’s laugh. One that still makes no sense is Hold On, an app where you hold your finger in one spot on the touch screen for as long as you can. That’s it. This could probably be amusing for a bunch of drunken people who are pretending to be sober, but that’s about it.Everyone loves to pop bubble wrap, which is most likely why the Bubble Wrap app is so popular. It just fills your screen with bubble wrap that you “pop” by touching each bubble. While this one doesn’t do it anything useful, it certainly is cool – the PhoneSaber. It basically turns your touchscreen into a light saber, complete with visuals and sounds. It’s pretty awesome, yet there seems to be limited things you can do with it. Challenge your friends to a duel, maybe? One that may seem silly, but has popped up at concerts and rock shows a lot lately, is the Virtual Zippo. Gone are the days when you hold up a lighter at shows if something moves you – now you have the virtual version. This is admittedly better than people just holding up their cell phones, which has always looked silly.CoinFlip is another that goes into the “is that really necessary?” category, yet everyone seems to have it. It does exactly what its name indicates – it flips a coin. A pretty amusing app is the Abacus, which seemingly goes against everything the iPhone really is – cutting edge technology. But again, maybe for the drunk folks trying to figure out how much money they have at the end of the night, this might work.Too tired to yell enthusiastically for your sports team of choice? Then the “Wooo!” app may be for you. It’s a button that shows up on your touchscreen, and every time you hit it, a tinny voice says “wooo!” Very exciting.Lastly, there is the I Can Has Cheezburger app, which sends you an update every time there’s a new location posted. Who doesn’t need that? There’s something compelling about some of these iPod touch apps, even though they do absolutely nothing useful, and in fact, just mostly take up space on your iPhone or iPod touch. However trivial some of these applications may seem, they offer enjoyment to the hundreds of thousands of users who download them. After all, isn’t that the point of these applications?

Have you ever been jonesing for your daily cup of Joe but had no idea where to go? Of course, the conveniences of modern technology will definitely put an end to that because among all of the other fun apps that the iPhone has to offer, there is now the Coffee Spot application that you can download for your own iPhone. You can actually get this for free for the lite edition, and there is a paid edition available where you can get the full app. You can find a variety of different locators within this app, if you are looking for things like donuts, pizza, or burgers, so it is completely multipurposed.

This Coffee Spot application is totally easy to use, especially since many users have issues with other iPhone apps that have problems with voice commands or are not user-friendly in any way. All you have to do to use this application is to click one time to find the closest cup of coffee to you. You can also find a complete listing of all the different coffee shops that are available to you in your area with the touch of a button, whether they are a large corporate chain or a small independent coffee house. You can then create a map or initiate a call to invite a friend to meet you at a specific coffee location. You can even put certain coffee shops on your list of favorites so that you can always find them if you are in the area again. This is pretty much a genius idea for an application, especially because we all know how much true coffee addicts need something like this. It is totally frustrating to be scratching your head while driving around and looking for a decent coffee shop, and still trying to make it to work on time.

This is especially helpful for the times when you are traveling, and you really have no awareness of your surroundings. If you are someone that is constantly on the go and visiting different locations, and this app will be your coffee lifeline because you can scope out the different varieties of coffee houses in the area to see which ones are to your liking. If you are a complete Starbucks fanatic, as many Americans are, then this will be the best way for you to find a Starbucks in your area, not to mention mark it as a personal favorite. However, this app will also give you the option to explore many of the local and independently run coffee houses that you might have otherwise overlooked. I can’t tell you how many times that I have stumbled upon a random café in a strip mall that was a real gem.

I encourage you to check out and explore all that the Coffee Spot application has to offer because you may uncover some amazing coffee locations right in your area. This application will help to take you off of the beaten path in search for the perfect cup of Joe. Amazing!
